One of Ghanaian twitter’s biggest names Nana Aba Anamoah had to spend some hours in hell with no access to the app after her account was hacked.
A team of hackers took over the GhOne TV journalist’s ‘@theNanaAba’ account last night and used it as a staging area to attack thousands more accounts on Twitter.
Having locked her out of her account, they renamed it to ”Twitter Support Team’ – with Nana Aba’s verified sticker beside the name – and then sent ‘official’ looking messages to people with a malware link which can be used to hack their own accounts if they clicked on it.
The message read: “Hi Dear User, Copyright infringement was detected in one of the tweets on your account. If you think copyright infringement is wrong, you need to provide feedback. Otherwise, your account will be suspended within 24 hours. You can give feedback at the link below. Thank you for your understanding. https://sites.google.com/view/help-twitter-contact-/… Thanks, Twitter Support”
If you see such a message from an account tagged ‘Twitter Support’ with a verified tag, many people might not take time to check what’s going on and might fall victim to this attack.
It’s highly likely thousands of accounts got hacked due to Nana Aba Anamoah’s account being hacked.
As at this morning the account is back in her hands though – and she’s humorously changed her screen name to ‘Account Restored’.
